The municipality of Esporles is small with less than 5,000 inhabitants. It is located in the Sierra de Tramontana area and only 15 km away from Palma de Mallorca. Since the climate is more humid here than in the rest of the island, it can snow in the winter.
Esporles is divided into Vilavella and Vilanova. The economy is mainly based on agriculture and livestock. It has always been a village of farmers and very rural. Today, it is based on tourism as are most of the Balearic Islands.
Due to its proximity to the main roads and to the main services, Esporles attracts a large number of international residents.
The village offers wonderful scenery where the Mediterranean vegetation of the mountains meets the beach. This creates a mixture of mountainous and sea ambiance at the same time. Among the typical Mallorcan houses with green shutters and colourful flowers, in Esporles you can find some remarkable buildings, such as churches and a hermitage.
The most well-known attraction near Esporles is the historic mansion and museum of La Granja, which is open to the public. It also has a religious heritage that can be appreciated in the large Gothic church and the bridges all around.
Every year in October, Esporles celebrates a special event: the food fair called Fira dolça (sweet fair) to commemorate the best pastry on the island. It also has a wide agenda of small events and parties that are celebrated primarily by local residents.
Although Esporles welcomes a large number of tourists, it is not a place that especially draws attention. Many visitors drive from here to Valldemossa and Banyalbufar by car because of the proximity to the town. If you are interested in the world of wine, Esporles is the ideal municipality, here there is the Es Verger winery that offers guided tours.
This small municipality is a perfect option, both for permanent residents and for those who want to have a holiday home on the island throughout the year.
Esporles has good local schools and good access to the city of Palma. Here you will find a lively and varied international community mixed with Mallorcan residents who will give you recommendations on agricultural products from local farms.
The prices of houses in Esporles are not excessively high. The price of a house is close to 250,000 euros. In addition, this municipality has a variety of farms and chalets available at higher prices, between 350,000 and 2 million euros.
